When I see other people’s altars or witness their witchcraft practices online, I can’t help but admire the beauty and creativity they bring to their craft. In fact, it makes me long for a time when I used to share my own witchy photos on Instagram (more on this at the end). However, I often wonder how many new witches might feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of tools, crystals, and other items that seem “essential”. When I began practicing witchcraft, I had limited access to resources, and online shopping wasn’t even a thing. My practice was born out of intention and simplicity. Over the years, I’ve learned that you don’t need all the bells and whistles to make magic happen.

In fact, most of what you need can be found right in your pantry. Simple herbs that carry potent energies, and black and white candles that can be used for just about any spell or ritual. The heart of witchcraft isn’t in the materials but in the energy and intention you bring to your practice. Social media might suggest otherwise, with its emphasis on elaborate setups and expensive tools. But magic has always been about connecting with the natural world and your inner self, not about acquiring more stuff.

Today, we’ll be exploring the commercialisation of witchcraft and how it can make us feel like we need to buy the next best thing to perfect our practice constantly. But the truth is, you can create powerful, meaningful magic without all the shiny objects. Let’s dive into how you can perfect your practice by focusing on intention and connection, rather than getting caught up in the consumerism that often surrounds modern witchcraft.

Balancing Magic and Materialism in Modern Witchcraft.

The Rise of Witchcraft in Popular Culture.

Over the past few years, witchcraft has become quite the buzzword. It’s popping up everywhere, from social media influencers showing off their beautiful altars to big brands launching ‘witchy’ product lines. While it’s great that more people are discovering magic and witchcraft, there’s a downside too. The true essence of witchcraft, which is deeply personal and spiritual, can sometimes get lost in all the hype. What was once a meaningful practice can easily be reduced to a trend, and that’s where things get complicated.

The Impact on Your Authentic Practice.

As witchcraft becomes a trend focusing on materialism, it’s easy for it to lose its authenticity. The focus can shift from connecting with nature and growing spiritually to buying the latest ‘must-have’ tools and trinkets. For those just starting out on their path, this can create the false belief that you need all these fancy items to be a ‘real’ witch. But here’s the truth – witchcraft isn’t about what you own. It’s about your intentions, your connection with the world around you, your personal journey and your craft.

Spotting the Signs of Commercialisation.

One of the first steps to staying true to your path is being able to spot when witchcraft is being commercialised. Here are a few signs to watch out for:

Overpriced ‘Witch Kits’: These kits often come with a few candles, crystals, and maybe some sage. All wrapped up in pretty packaging, of course. While they might look tempting, sometimes they’re simply overpriced and filled with items you’ll never use. Not to say there aren’t kits out there that don’t provide value, especially to those discovering the craft! However, it’s important to do your research, read reviews, and be mindful of your witchy purchases. This way you can make sure you’re getting what you will actually use, and not just tat.

Social Media Pressure: Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are full of gorgeous photos of elaborate rituals and expensive tools. While these can be inspiring, they can also make you feel like you need to keep up with a certain image of what a witch should look like. Be inspired! But also trust your intuition and be true to your instincts. What works for one witch, may not work for another.

Big Brand Products: When you see major brands jumping on the ‘witchy’ bandwagon, selling everything from ‘mystical’ makeup to ‘enchanted’ jewellery, it’s a sign that witchcraft is being turned into a marketing tool. These products are often more about looking good than actually connecting with your spirituality. If you like it and think it’ll come in useful – go for it! But don’t buy it just because you think you need it to be a real witch.

Staying True to Your Path.

Focus on What Resonates with You.

At its heart, witchcraft is all about personal empowerment, connecting with nature, and growing spiritually. These things come from within and can’t be bought in a shop. Instead of getting caught up in what everyone else is doing or buying, take some time to reflect on what really resonates with you. What aspects of witchcraft draw you in? Which practices feel the most meaningful? Your path is yours alone, and it doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

Get Creative and Craft Your Own Tools.

Instead of buying pre-made tools, why not get a bit creative and make your own? This could be as simple as finding a branch in your garden to use as a wand or making a spell jar with items you already have at home (I often reuse jars from my pantry!) When you make your own tools, you’re not just saving money. You’re also putting your energy and intention into them, which makes them even more powerful and personal to you.

Be Mindful with Your Purchases.

When you do decide to buy something for your practice, do it mindfully. Ask yourself if you really need it or if it’s just something you want because it’s trendy or looks nice. Though, with my Venus stellium I have to admit I often get drawn to shiny things! However, consider supporting small businesses, especially those run by fellow witches. These businesses are often more in tune with the spiritual significance of their products and usually source their materials more ethically than big brands do.

Embrace a Simple Approach.

You don’t need a lot of stuff to practice witchcraft. In fact, many witches find that a simpler, more minimalist approach actually deepens their connection to their craft. Focus on a few items that really mean something to you – a favourite crystal, a journal for your thoughts and spells, and maybe a candle or two for your rituals. Remember, the most powerful tool in witchcraft is you! Your intuition, your intentions, and your energy.

Cultivating an Ethical Practice.

Respect Cultural Origins.

Part of keeping your practice true is being aware of where different aspects of witchcraft come from and respecting those origins. For example, using white sage for smudging is a practice that comes from Indigenous cultures in North America. Due to its popularity, white sage has been overharvested, and its use by non-Indigenous people can be seen as disrespectful. You’ll notice that I always refer to saining, rather than smudging, as saining is an open practice. Being mindful of these things helps keep your practice respectful and rooted in understanding.

Support Ethical Businesses.

When you’re buying tools or supplies, think about where they come from and who made them. Look for businesses that are upfront about their sourcing and that support fair trade practices. It might cost a bit more, but it’s worth it to ensure that your practice is aligned with your values. Supporting small, independent creators also helps keep the magic within the community, ensuring your money goes to those who are genuinely invested in the craft.

Stay True to Timeless Magic.

Witchcraft trends come and go, but real magic is timeless. Instead of jumping on the latest trend, focus on building a practice that’s meaningful to you. This might mean sticking to the basics, like meditating, journaling, and connecting with nature, rather than trying every new thing that comes along. Trends can be fun, and it’s great to continue your learning and education by trying new things – but not every new thing needs to be incorporated into your practice.

In a world where witchcraft has become increasingly commercialised, it’s important to remain true to your spiritual path. Items vs Intention.

The Allure of Magical Tools.

As mentioned, I’m a Taurus with a Venus stellium, so I love pretty things, and am always drawn to beautiful magical tools (though I have learned restraint over the years due to moving as often as I have!) Whether it’s a perfectly polished crystal a handcrafted wand, or a set of intricately designed tarot cards, these items can add a special touch to your practice. They can have a deep, personal meaning, look lovely on your altar and can help set the mood for your rituals. However, it’s important to remember that these tools are just that – tools! While they can enhance your practice, they aren’t what makes your magic work. That power comes from within you!

The True Power of Intention.

In witchcraft, your intention is everything. You could have the most exquisite tools in the world, but without clear, focused intention, they won’t do much on their own. It’s your intention that channels your energy and directs it towards your goals. Whether you’re casting a spell, performing a ritual, or simply setting an intention for the day, the real magic lies in your mind, heart, and spirit. Not in the objects around you.

Finding Balance.

It’s okay to enjoy the beauty of magical items, and draw inspiration from witchy influencers, it’s essential to maintain perspective. Rather than relying solely on these items, focus on cultivating strong, clear intentions. Ask yourself why you’re drawn to a particular tool and how it aligns with your intentions. By keeping intention at the forefront, you ensure that your practice remains authentic and true to your personal path, rather than being driven by the desire for more things.

Making Your Practice Personal

When you prioritise intention over items, your practice becomes uniquely yours. For instance, if you don’t have a fancy wand, a simple stick found on a nature walk can be just as powerful, if not more so, because it’s infused with your intention and the energy of your experience. The same goes for other tools. It’s not about having the ‘right’ items but about how you use them with purpose and mindfulness. Does the universe care if it’s an Athame or Butter Knife? Probably not. This approach not only makes your practice more meaningful but also frees you from the pressure of constantly acquiring more stuff.

Trusting Yourself Over Trends.

With the rise of commercialised witchcraft, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you need the latest trendy items to be a ‘proper’ witch. But true magic doesn’t come from following trends. It comes from trusting yourself and your intentions. Instead of getting caught up in what others are doing or buying, focus on what feels right for you. Trust your inner wisdom and remember that your intentions are the most powerful tool you have.

Final Thoughts.

Remember, the core of our practice lies within us, not in the things we own. It’s so easy to get caught up in the beauty of a well-curated altar or feel tempted by the latest magical tools, but the true power of witchcraft comes from your intention and connection to the energies around you. Don’t feel pressured by the commercialisation of witchcraft into thinking you need more to be a ‘real’ witch. You already have everything you need within you!

Focus on what truly matters: intention, mindfulness, and connection. Embrace the simplicity of using what’s at hand, whether it’s herbs from your kitchen or candles in basic colours. Magic is all about energy, transformation, and the power of your will, not the price tag on your tools. Trust that your practice, no matter how simple, is more than enough.

As you continue on your path, keep in mind that you don’t need to buy into the consumerism that often surrounds witchcraft today. Stay true to yourself and your practice, knowing that the most powerful magic is the one that comes from your heart and spirit. Keep it simple, keep it real, and focus on what truly matters.

More About Why I Don’t Have Many Witchy Tools!

Over the past twenty years, I’ve moved cities and countries more times than I can count. Each move meant leaving behind or giving away many of my cherished witchy tools, especially when I left Scotland. I had a lot of magical items there, but unfortunately, when I left, my ex-husband refused to return them to me. While this was tough, it led me to streamline and refine my practice. I’ve come to focus on making mindful choices about the tools I use, avoiding the commercialisation and materialism that can sometimes overshadow the true essence of witchcraft.

What I’ve learned through all of this is that with a bit of research, you can find that many herbs share the same properties, just like different crystals can serve similar purposes. We don’t need to have a full apothecary or a vast collection of tools to practise witchcraft effectively. The real magic is in understanding the energy and intention behind these elements, rather than feeling like you need to own everything. It’s a comforting reminder that simplicity and knowledge can be far more powerful than having every item on the shelf.

Having a beautiful altar is lovely and meaningful, but the truth is, you are the power behind your practice. The tools, herbs, and crystals are helpful, but they aren’t necessary to create magic. The true strength of your craft comes from within, and no amount of material things can replace the power of your intention and your connection to the energies around you.
