New Year’s Eve has always felt like a threshold – a pause between what’s been and what’s yet to come. For me, it’s more than just fireworks and resolutions. It’s a chance to set my intentions and align my energy for the year ahead. I love to spend New Year’s Eve reflecting on where I’ve been, releasing what I no longer need, and embracing the possibilities that lie ahead.
Over the years, I’ve found that how I spend this evening shapes how I step into the new year. It’s a time to consciously welcome joy, clarity, and magic into my life. From lighting candles to honour the past to writing down hopes for the future, these small but meaningful rituals help me feel grounded and inspired as I cross the threshold into another chapter.
This year, I’ve pulled together 12 of my favourite New Year’s Eve rituals to share with you. These practices are simple and adaptable, perfect whether you’re celebrating solo (like myself!) or with those you love. They’re designed to help you step into the new year with intention and magic, ready to embrace whatever comes next. Let’s make this New Year’s Eve unforgettable.

Rituals to Perform as the Clock Strikes Twelve.
The Grape Ritual for Luck.
This ritual went viral last year on TikTok! This Spanish tradition of eating twelve grapes at midnight is such a fun way to invite luck into the new year. Each grape represents a month, and the goal is to eat all twelve before the final chime of the clock. No pressure if you can’t manage it, though – it’s the intention that counts! As you eat each grape, think about what you’d like that month to hold. January might be for a fresh start, while June could symbolise growth or success. Let the sweetness (or tartness!) of each grape remind you that life is full of surprises, and welcome them all with an open heart.
Scottish First-Footing Tradition.
First-footing is one of my favourite Hogmanay traditions from Scotland (alongside Steak Pie!). It’s all about the first person to step into your home after midnight bringing you luck for the year ahead. Traditionally, it’s a dark-haired man carrying symbolic gifts like coal, Madeira cake, or whisky, but honestly, you can make it your own. If you’re spending the evening solo, you could even step out just before midnight and then return to your home with something meaningful – a candle for light, a coin for abundance, or even just yourself, ready to bring all the good vibes in with you.
Bay Leaf Wishes.
We all know Bay leaves have a powerful magical energy. For this ritual, take one and write a word or phrase on it that reflects your biggest intention for the year ahead. Maybe it’s “peace,” “abundance,” or “healing.” At midnight, hold the bay leaf in your hand, close your eyes, and really feel that intention coming alive in your future. Then carefully burn the leaf in a fireproof dish, letting the smoke carry your wish out into the universe. It’s such a simple but powerful way to set the tone for the year ahead.
Cinnamon Prosperity Sprinkle.
Cinnamon always feels like warmth and magic rolled into one. At midnight, take a pinch of ground cinnamon and stand at your front door. Blow the cinnamon into your home, imagining it filling every corner with abundance, positivity, and opportunities. You can say something simple like, “Prosperity flows into my home with ease,” or just let your energy speak for itself. Afterward, you can sweep up any leftover cinnamon, knowing the essence of your intention has already done its work.
Burn Incense for Your Intentions.
Incense is a great way to connect with your intentions. Choose a scent that resonates with what you’d like to invite into your life – lavender for peace, sandalwood for clarity, or cinnamon for prosperity. Light the incense at midnight and let its smoke carry your dreams and intentions upward, spreading them into the universe. As the incense burns, focus on what you want to manifest in the year ahead, visualising the energy moving through the smoke and out into the world. Allow the gentle scent to ground you in the moment.
Sweep Out the Old.
This one feels so satisfying, especially if you have strong Earth placements or love to clean! Take a broom and start at the back of your home, sweeping towards the front door as the clock strikes twelve. Picture yourself clearing out all the negativity, stagnation, and old energy from the past year. When you reach the door, give it a symbolic sweep outside, letting everything you’ve released leave with it. It’s such a grounding way to welcome fresh, positive energy into your space.
Open Your Doors and Windows.
At midnight, open your front door or windows to let the old year leave and welcome the new one in. Stand near the doorway or window and take a moment to feel the shift. Imagine the breeze carrying away any heaviness from the past year, and then allow the fresh energy of the new year to flow in. It’s such a simple act, but it always feels like a breath of fresh air – literally and energetically.
Burn Away What No Longer Serves You.
As midnight approaches, take a piece of paper and write down everything you wish to leave behind in the past year. Be honest and thorough – whether it’s a bad habit, lingering resentment, or even just a sense of stagnation. Fold the paper, and as the clock strikes twelve, set it alight in a fireproof dish. As the flames consume the paper, visualise the energy of those things burning away, leaving you lighter and freer. Once it’s burned completely, take a deep breath and focus on the possibilities of a fresh start.
Write Your Intentions in the Air.
There’s something magical about writing your intentions in the air. Use a sparkler, a wand, a candle, a stick of incense, or even just your finger to “write” the words that sum up what you want to call in for the year ahead – like “love,” “peace,” or “growth.” As you do it, visualise the energy of your words staying behind, ready to manifest in the coming months. If you’re using a sparkler, it feels especially enchanting to watch the light trace your hopes into the night sky.
Plant a Seed for Growth.
Planting a seed at midnight is a beautiful way to symbolise growth and new beginnings. Choose a small pot and some soil, and select a seed that resonates with your intentions for the year- basil for abundance, lavender for calm, or even a wildflower for creativity. As you plant the seed, visualise your dreams taking root and growing alongside it. Keep the pot somewhere you’ll see it often, and tend to it with love as a reminder to nurture your goals throughout the year.
Hold a Glass of Water.
Water has a cleansing and renewing energy. Fill a glass with water and hold it as the clock strikes twelve. Take a moment to visualise the water absorbing anything you want to release – negativity, stress, or old patterns. Then pour the water away, either down the drain or outside, letting it take everything you’ve released with it. This simple act always leaves me feeling lighter and ready for a fresh start.
Scatter Rice or Lentils.
Rice and lentils are symbols of abundance and fertility in many cultures, and they’re such a lovely addition to your New Year rituals. As the clock strikes twelve, scatter a handful at your doorstep, imagining them spreading blessings, prosperity, and opportunities into your life. If you like, you can gather them back up later as a way of collecting the fruits of your intentions – or leave them for the birds as an offering to nature.

Final Thoughts.
As the clock strikes twelve and we step into the new year, remember that it’s not about perfection or ticking every box – New Years Eve is about honouring where you’ve been and welcoming where you’re headed. These rituals aren’t tasks to complete, but opportunities to connect with yourself, your intentions, and the magic that surrounds you. Let them be a reminder that every moment holds the potential for transformation.
Of course, you don’t have to follow these rituals exactly as I’ve written or even do them all. Choose what feels right for you, adapt them to your circumstances, and make them your own. Magic is personal, and the power lies in the intention you bring to it. Trust yourself, lean into what resonates, and allow this new year to unfold in a way that aligns with your heart.
As you move forward, carry the energy you’ve created tonight with you. Let it guide your steps and inspire your days. And if things don’t go to plan, know that you can always return to yourself, your practice, and your intentions. The new year isn’t just one moment. It’s a collection of them, and every single one is an opportunity to create the life you want.
