That Quiet Wondering After the Magic is Done
If you’ve ever cast a spell and then found yourself standing there thinking, “Did that actually work?”… you are absolutely not alone. I think every witch, no matter how experienced, has had that moment of uncertainty after the candle goes out or the last word of an intention is spoken. It’s one of the most common questions I get asked, and honestly, it’s one I asked myself for a long time too. The tricky thing is that spellwork doesn’t always come with a flashing neon sign that says “Yes! It worked!” More often, the signs are subtle, layered, and deeply personal. So today, I want to walk you through what to look out for, how to trust your own experience, and why the answer might already be unfolding around you without you even realising it.
Signs That Something Has Shifted
The Feeling Immediately After
One of the first things to pay attention to is how you feel the moment your spell or ritual comes to a close. This is something I always encourage people to tune into because it’s often the most honest signal you’ll get. Do you feel lighter? Calmer? Like something has been released or set in motion? That sense of peace or completion that washes over you after a ritual is not just your imagination. It’s your energy responding to the work you’ve done.
On the flip side, if you felt distracted, disconnected, or rushed during your spell, that’s worth noticing too. It doesn’t mean the spell failed, but it might be pointing you toward refining how you prepare or ground yourself next time. Your emotional state during and after magic is genuinely informative, so try not to brush it off.
Dreams and the In-Between Space
After casting a spell, many people notice vivid or meaningful dreams in the days that follow. This is actually one of my favourite signs to look out for. Your subconscious and your energy body are busy processing things even while you sleep, and dreams can be a wonderful way for that to surface. You might dream of the outcome you were working towards, or symbols that feel deeply connected to your intention.
Keep a notepad by your bed and jot down anything that feels significant when you wake up. You don’t need to be a dream expert to pick up on themes that keep repeating or images that feel charged with meaning. Trust yourself here.
Synchronicities and Small Signs
This one is big. After a spell, start paying attention to coincidences that feel a little too perfect to be random. Maybe you’ve been working on a spell for a new job and suddenly an old contact reaches out with an opportunity. Maybe you’ve been casting for more peace at home and a difficult relationship dynamic quietly starts to soften. These little moments of alignment, where life seems to nudge you in the right direction, are often the universe’s way of letting you know your magic is moving.
I always say that magic rarely works in one dramatic swoosh. It tends to weave itself into the everyday, creating openings and pathways that feel natural but are quietly extraordinary. Keep your eyes open for those.
What Slows or Blocks Results
Impatience and Obsessing Over the Outcome
I know this one can be hard to hear, but one of the biggest things that can slow down or muddy the results of a spell is constantly checking in on it. Casting a spell and then spending every day anxiously wondering if it has worked yet creates a kind of energetic friction. It’s a bit like planting a seed and then digging it up every other day to see if it’s sprouted. Give your magic room to breathe and grow.
This doesn’t mean you forget about your intention entirely. It means you release it with trust, knowing you’ve done the work and now it’s in motion. If you find yourself spiralling into obsessive thinking about the outcome, grounding yourself and returning to a state of calm trust is genuinely part of the magical practice.
Misaligned Timing
Sometimes a spell does work, but not in the timeframe you expected. Magic tends to operate on its own schedule, and that schedule is often wiser than ours. A spell for love might take three weeks instead of three days because there’s something in your life that needs to shift first to make space for it. A spell for abundance might unfold gradually rather than all at once.
Seasonal energies, moon cycles, and what’s happening in your own life can all influence how quickly a spell manifests. Patience really is part of the practice, and learning to trust timing is one of the deeper lessons of working with magic.
Mixed or Unclear Intentions
If you weren’t entirely sure what you wanted when you cast your spell, or if part of you was holding back or feeling doubtful, that murkiness can show up in the results. This isn’t about being hard on yourself. It’s about recognising that clarity of intention is genuinely one of the most powerful ingredients in spellwork. If you’re finding that results are foggy or partial, it might be worth revisiting your intention and casting again with more focus and specificity.
How to Track Your Magic
Keep a Spell Journal
This is something I recommend to absolutely everyone. A simple journal where you record the date you cast a spell, your intention, the tools or methods you used, and how you felt is incredibly valuable. Then, as days and weeks pass, you can note down anything that seems relevant, shifts in circumstances, dreams, feelings, synchronicities, and eventually the outcome itself.
Over time, your journal becomes a beautiful record of your magical life and a really practical tool for understanding how your own energy works. You’ll start to notice patterns, like which moon phases tend to bring stronger results for you, or which types of spells tend to manifest quickly versus slowly. This kind of self-knowledge is genuinely irreplaceable.
The 28 Day Rule
A rough guide that many witches find helpful is to give a spell around 28 days, which is roughly one full lunar cycle, before deciding whether it has worked or not. This gives enough time for energy to move, circumstances to shift, and results to begin showing up in tangible ways. Of course, some spells work much faster and some take longer, but 28 days is a lovely baseline to work with.
If 28 days have passed and nothing seems to have shifted at all, it’s worth reflecting on whether your intention was clear, whether the timing was right, and whether there’s anything you might want to adjust before casting again. Sometimes a spell simply needs to be repeated with a bit more energy or focus.
Final Thoughts.
I want you to know that doubting yourself after a spell is completely normal and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Magic is deeply personal, and learning to read your own signs, trust your own feelings, and interpret your own results takes time. It’s a relationship you build with your practice, and like all relationships, it deepens the more attention and care you give it. Be gentle with yourself as you learn.
I also want to remind you that your magic is valid even when the results are subtle or slow. Not every spell produces a dramatic, undeniable outcome. Sometimes it shifts your perspective just enough that you respond to a situation differently, and that different response is what changes everything. The magic was still there. It was working through you all along, and that is genuinely beautiful.
Finally, if you ever find yourself unsure, come back to how you felt when you cast your spell. That moment of clarity, warmth, or peace that settles over you during your ritual is real. It’s your energy engaging with something greater than the everyday, and it matters. Trust that feeling. Trust your practice. And most importantly, trust yourself, because you are the most powerful ingredient in any spell you will ever cast.
