There is something about stepping into the sun that instantly lifts the spirit. Maybe it’s the warmth on our skin, the golden light dancing across our homes, or the way everything feels just a little more possible in the sunshine. For a long time, I didn’t truly realise how much energy I was soaking up from the sun until I moved somewhere that bathed me in light for most of the year. Now, when I practise solar magic, I feel like I am reconnecting with a life force that’s always been there, quietly waiting for me to notice. The sun isn’t just a ball of fire in the sky. It’s a source of power, clarity, strength and joy. And when we learn how to work with it intentionally, it can become one of the most energising parts of our spiritual practice.

What is Solar Magic?

Solar magic is the practice of aligning your intentions, rituals and energy work with the sun’s presence, rhythm and symbolic power. It focuses on harnessing the vitality, growth, clarity and strength associated with solar energy. Just like lunar magic works with the moon’s emotional tides and quiet wisdom, solar magic connects us to motivation, courage and radiance.

It’s not just about basking in the sun, although that’s certainly part of it. Solar magic is about consciously engaging with the sun’s energy in your spells, rituals and daily habits. Whether it’s through sun-charged water, fire magic, affirmations at sunrise or wearing gold during ritual, this path honours the illuminating and life-giving force of the sun.

The Sun as a Symbol of Vitality

In almost every culture, the sun has been a symbol of life, power and divine presence. It’s often associated with deities of strength, justice, kingship, healing and abundance. Think of Ra in Egyptian mythology, Apollo in Greek stories, or Amaterasu in Japanese lore. The sun represents clarity, visibility and growth. When we invite the sun’s energy into our craft, we are asking for a boost in confidence, a spotlight on truth and a gentle fire to burn away what no longer serves us.

When you’re feeling stuck, uninspired or low in energy, connecting with solar magic can help reignite your inner spark. It’s perfect for those times when you need to reset your focus, recharge your body or remind yourself of your worth.

How to Work with the Sun in Your Practice

Morning Rituals

The best time to begin working with solar energy is in the morning. As the sun rises, so too can your energy. Greeting the sun each day with intention helps create a rhythm of gratitude and empowerment.

You might stand outside with a cup of tea, close your eyes and soak in the light. Or you could speak a short affirmation as the sun rises, something like, “I rise with purpose, I shine with clarity, I am warmed by the light of my truth.” These moments do not have to be elaborate. Even the simplest ritual, when performed with intention, becomes magic.

Charging Water and Tools

Water that has been left in the sunlight can carry solar energy into your spellwork. Fill a clear glass bottle or jar with water and leave it in a sunny spot for several hours. You can add herbs, crystals (ensure they’re water safe) or even a sigil drawn on paper beneath the jar. This solar-charged water can be used to anoint your tools, cleanse your altar or refresh yourself when you need a boost.

You can also charge candles, jewellery or spell ingredients by placing them in sunlight. I often leave my gold and yellow candles, solar herbs and even certain oils in the window for a few hours to let them absorb the sun’s energy before using them in ritual.

Fire and Flame Magic

Because the sun is a fiery force, it’s perfect to incorporate into candle spells and flame rituals. Lighting a candle at noon, when the sun is highest in the sky, is a powerful way to align with its peak energy. Use this time for spells involving success, confidence, visibility or physical healing.

You could write a goal or intention on a piece of paper and burn it (safely) in a fireproof bowl under the midday sun. The combination of solar alignment and the transformative nature of fire makes this an effective and energising practice.

Herbs, Crystals and Colours for Solar Magic

Herbs

Many bright, aromatic herbs correspond with the sun. Think rosemary, calendula, chamomile, sunflower, basil and cinnamon. These herbs can be added to spell jars, teas, incense or bath rituals to bring in vitality and solar strength.

Using these herbs during the day, particularly around noon, amplifies their effects. Try brewing a tea with calendula and cinnamon to boost courage, or adding basil to a charm bag for success.

Crystals

Crystals associated with solar energy often have golden, orange or yellow hues. Citrine, sunstone, carnelian, amber and tiger’s eye are all strong allies in solar magic.

Wear them during the day to carry the sun’s energy with you, or place them on your altar to draw in strength and joy. I like to hold sunstone during meditation when I need clarity or motivation.

Colours

Gold, yellow, orange and bronze are all colours connected to the sun. Wearing these colours, incorporating them into your altar, or even lighting candles in these shades can help you tap into the frequency of solar energy.

They represent power, warmth, happiness and expansion. A simple gold scarf or yellow candle on your altar can go a long way in calling that in.

Working with Solar Deities

If your practice includes deity work, solar deities can be powerful guides in cultivating courage, honour, willpower and clarity. Each sun god or goddess brings their own flavour of solar energy, from the disciplined might of Apollo to the radiant compassion of Amaterasu.

You can honour them with offerings of sun-charged water, bright flowers, songs or artwork created in their name. Calling on these deities during ritual can bring focused guidance and a strong spiritual anchor in your solar work.

Even if you don’t work with deities, meditating on solar archetypes like The Sun card in the tarot can bring similar insight and resonance.

Everyday Ways to Practise Solar Magic

You don’t need a grand altar or a perfect ritual to bring solar magic into your life. It can be as simple as opening your curtains every morning to let in the light, walking during the golden hour, or tending to your plants with mindful appreciation of the sun’s role in their growth.

Speak affirmations in the mirror while standing in sunlight. Light a candle when you’re feeling low and imagine it pulling in the warmth of the sun to reignite your motivation. Cook with solar herbs or display oranges and lemons in your kitchen as a visual and energetic reminder of joy.

Remember, magic doesn’t always have to be complicated. Consistency and intention are what matter most.

Healing with the Sun

Solar energy has a natural connection to health and vitality. While we always want to be safe with sun exposure, spending a little time in natural sunlight each day can do wonders for your mental and physical wellbeing. It can help regulate your circadian rhythm, boost mood, support immune function and bring clarity to foggy thoughts.

In spiritual work, the sun is a gentle healer. Its light shines into the dark corners, helping us see what’s been hidden or pushed aside. It brings confidence, bravery and a reminder that we are allowed to take up space and be seen.

If you are healing from heartbreak, burnout, low self-worth or creative blocks, solar magic can be a balm. Invite the sun into your rituals, but also into your heart. Let it remind you of your resilience and brilliance.

Crafting a Solar Spell for Vitality

One of my favourite solar spells is one I return to often, especially when I’m feeling flat or disconnected. I call it my Vitality Charm.

I take a small yellow or gold pouch and fill it with a piece of sunstone, a pinch of rosemary, a dried orange peel and a few words I’ve written on paper like “energy,” “clarity” and “joy.” I hold the pouch in the sun, speak my intention aloud and keep it near me through the day.

You can customise this charm with whatever you feel drawn to. The important part is the intention and letting the sun charge it with that glowing, unstoppable energy. Keep it on your desk, in your bag or under your pillow to carry that spark with you.

Letting the Sun Hold You

There will be times in life when the darkness feels overwhelming, when the cold creeps into your spirit and you feel distant from your own spark. Solar magic is there to gently guide you back to yourself. It reminds you that light exists, even when you can’t see it.

You don’t have to do everything perfectly. Just open a window. Let the sunlight warm your skin. Say thank you. That’s magic.

Let the sun hold you. Let it light up the places within that have long been hidden. Let it remind you that you are powerful, radiant, and worthy of joy.
