Remember when you were a child and being sent to your room wasn’t really a punishment? It was a cosy and safe place, one of your sacred spaces, filled with all your favourite things. It was calm and helped you feel better when you were worried or upset.
Well, maybe it wasn’t like that for everyone, but personally, I always felt my room was very special. It was a special place where I could let my mind, emotions, and imagination run free, without anyone judging or interrupting me. It was a space I could connect with my spirituality, The Fates, and the Divine Goddess on my terms.
Isn’t it strange that as adults, we seem to forget how important it is to have a special place that is just for us? We share rooms, homes, and most of our spaces, and somehow our own personal space gets lost and forgotten as life and responsibilities take over.
I’ve always believed in the importance of having my own special space. Even though I haven’t always had the chance to have one, especially when I was in a relationship, it has always been something I strive for.
In fact, there was a time when I was in a relationship and the person I was living with couldn’t understand why I needed a “study” – a space just for myself, where I could keep my books and things that I love. However, once I finally had the opportunity to create my sacred space, my “study”, he could see why it was so important to me. The room was like an outward representation of who I am on the inside. It was my peaceful place for reflecting and meditating.
It was my sacred space.
Sacred Spaces.
The concept of sacred spaces has a long and connected history with human spirituality and how we perceive ourselves. In different cultures and times, people have looked for these special places to not just discover who they are, but also to feel connected to something greater than themselves.
While religious buildings like churches, mosques, or temples are definitely sacred, in this situation, sacred spaces are more focused on our own self-reflection instead of worshipping outwardly. These personal spaces for contemplation can be discovered in nature, in our homes, or even within our own beings.
These spaces ask us to slow down, pause, and listen to our own thoughts, emotions, and our souls.
Serenity is found in the sacred spaces we carve out for our spirits to breathe.
What makes a sacred space special is its ability to bring us a feeling of peace, unity, and security. When we enter these spaces, we can sense their sacredness, which surrounds us and goes beyond what is usual.
In these places, we can let go of our worries, find comfort in silence, and start exploring ourselves.
Sacred places give us much-needed shelter from the loudness and interruptions of our everyday life. They enable us to escape the disorder and enter a realm of silence, where we can hear the inner voices of our beings and discover clearness amid confusion.
Sacred spaces are more than just places to relax and rest. Research has proven that spending time in these locations can help us feel better in many ways. They can lower stress, decrease blood pressure, and improve how clearly we think. They give us a break from our busy lives and help us regain our strength.
Benefits of Sacred Spaces.
Sacred places provide many advantages that greatly affect our overall well-being. These benefits go beyond religious or spiritual beliefs and include several aspects of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Let’s examine some of the amazing benefits that spending time in sacred places can offer.
Stress Reduction.
Sacred places are like peaceful havens that help us take a break from the worries and busyness of everyday life. They have a calm and relaxing atmosphere that helps us feel calm and rested. When we’re in these places, we can forget about all the pressures from the outside world and find a sense of inner peace, which reduces stress and makes us feel good. It’s like a little getaway that helps us feel better.
Emotional Healing.
Sacred places can make us feel better emotionally. They are safe and comforting environments where we can deal with and let go of our emotions. Whether we pray, meditate, or just spend time in these special places, they help us recognise and process our feelings. This leads to stronger emotional strength and personal development.
Spiritual Connection.
Sacred places give us a chance to strengthen our spiritual connection, no matter what religion or spirituality we follow. They provide a safe space for us to pray, meditate, or think deeply, allowing us to connect with something larger than ourselves. In these places, we can find comfort, guidance, and a feeling of going beyond our ordinary lives, which helps improve our spiritual health.
Sacred spaces are where your spirit aligns with the universe, creating a dance of cosmic harmony
Mental Clarity and Focus.
Sacred spaces have a calm and tidy atmosphere that helps our minds stay clear and focused. When we enter these spaces, we can temporarily forget about our concerns and things that distract us. This lets us focus on the here and now, and gives us the chance to think deeply or pray. Having a clear mind like this can make us more aware of ourselves, help us make better decisions, and be more skilled at solving problems.
Inspiration and Creativity.
Sacred places have always been connected to bringing out inspiring art and creative projects. The beauty, symbols, and peacefulness found in these places can spark our imagination, stimulate new thoughts, and unleash our creative abilities. Whether we are writers, artists, musicians, or just looking for a creative way to express ourselves, sacred places can offer the inspiration necessary to access our natural creativity.
Physical Well-being.
Spending time in sacred places can be good for our physical health. These places often have things from nature like gardens, flowing water, or fresh air, which help us feel alive and well. Studies have shown that being in nature or beautiful environments can lower blood pressure, lessen the chance of heart problems, and improve physical health overall.
Sense of Belonging and Community.
Sacred spaces create a feeling of belonging and togetherness. They are where people with similar beliefs come together to share their ideas, help each other, and participate in activities as a group. These spaces make us feel connected and remind us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. The sense of community in sacred spaces gives us social support, a feeling of being united, and the chance to form meaningful relationships with others.
Restoration and Renewal.
Sacred places help us feel refreshed and restored. When we spend time in these calm and peaceful spaces, we can regain our strength, revitalise ourselves, and regain a sense of balance. These places give us a chance to take a break from our busy lives, so we can recharge and go back to our daily tasks with a renewed sense of direction and understanding.
Creating Your Own Sacred Space.
Just like when you decorate your home or create an altar, creating your sacred space is a very personal experience. Only you will know, instinctively and purposefully, what feels right, what doesn’t, and what is necessary or unnecessary.
Remember, this area is special to you, and exclusively for you – although you might choose to share it with others. Put all your emotions, thoughts, and feelings into your area and you will be given tranquillity, contemplation, and something genuinely unique – to you.
Choose a Space.
Begin by choosing a specific place in your home or even outside where you can create your special area. It might be a small part of a room, a comfy corner, a balcony, or even a section of your garden. Pick a place that feels cosy, and private, and matches what you want for your special space.
Clear and Cleanse the Space.
Before you start preparing your special area, spend some time clearing any physical and energetic mess. Get rid of things you don’t need and create a neat, empty space. Think about saining, or essential oils to purify the area energetically and make it ready for your special purposes.
Personalise with Meaningful Objects.
Enhance your special area by placing objects and decorations that are personally meaningful and align with your spiritual beliefs or values. Consider adding statues, crystals, pictures, sacred symbols, artwork, or plants. Select items that bring you a feeling of calm, motivation, or connection to the divine.
Lighting and Ambience.
Pay attention to how your special area looks and feels. It’s best to have sunlight, as it makes the space feel cosy and alive. If you can’t have sunlight, you can use soft lights like candles, fairy lights, or Himalayan salt lamps to make it calm and peaceful. Try different lights to find what makes you feel most relaxed.
Comfortable Seating.
Make sure your special place has comfy seats. Put cushions, a cosy chair, or a meditation pillow to support your relaxation and meditation practices. The seats should make you want to sit down and feel relaxed as you spend time in your special place.
Nature’s Presence.
If you can, add natural things to your sacred space. You can put indoor plants, flowers, crystals, or a small bowl of stones from the beach you like. This will make the space feel more beautiful and alive, like the natural world. Having nature in your sacred space can make you feel more connected and at peace.
Create sacred spaces that serve as sanctuaries for your spirit, fostering a deep connection to the divine.
Sacred Rituals and Practices.
Consider why you want to create a special place that is important to you. Think about the things you want to do in this space, like meditating, praying, writing in a journal, doing yoga, or any other spiritual activity that you enjoy. Think about adding things to your sacred space that are connected to these activities, like a soft cushion for meditating, a book of prayers, or a journal for writing.
Sacred Sounds.
Sound can have a big impact on making a special feeling. Pick music, chants, mantras, or sounds from nature that make you feel calm. Gentle instrumental music, singing bowls, or recordings of birds or water can make your space feel peaceful and help you relax.
Regular Maintenance.
Take the time to regularly take care of and maintain your special area. Keep it tidy, neat, and without too much stuff. Clean the surfaces, change the flowers or plants, and replace any candles that have burnt out. Frequently cleanse the energy of the area using saining or practices that make you feel good.
Intentional Visits.
Make a promise to regularly go to your special place. Set aside specific time for thinking, resting, praying, or doing activities that make you feel good inside. Think of your special place with respect and openness, allowing yourself to fully experience the calmness and spiritual connection it provides.
Final Thoughts.
Remember, your special place is a reflection of your own unique journey and spiritual path. Feel free to adjust and personalise these steps according to your preferences, beliefs, and available resources. Allow your special place to change and develop with you, adding new things or adjusting its setup as needed.
Creating your own special place provides a safe space for self-discovery, inner peace, and spiritual connection. It becomes a sanctuary where you can escape from the outside world and tap into your own divine essence.
Embrace this chance to cultivate a space that nourishes your soul and supports your journey towards peace and spiritual fulfilment.
Every breath taken in a sacred space is an affirmation of your spiritual journey.
