Inspired by Bees, Granny Weatherwax, and a TikTok Witch
Some blog posts come to life from hours of research and careful planning. Others arrive like buzzing messengers through your window, landing gently in your lap and whispering, “you’re writing about me today.” That was exactly how this one came about. I was scrolling through TikTok, mid matcha latte, when one of my favourite witchy creators said something that lit me up: “Sure, you tell your dramas to the river spirits, but I tells the bees.”
That one sentence brought me right back to Granny Weatherwax.
Granny Weatherwax, the most powerful witch in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, didn’t fuss with fancy tools or perform spells for show. She didn’t need to. Her magic was quiet, layered in deep knowing, and deeply connected to the land. One of the most iconic things about her? She worked with bees. Not in some dramatic, lightning-strike kind of way. Just calmly. Purposefully. The bees respected her. And ever since reading those scenes, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of bee magic.
Today’s post is for anyone curious about how bees can become a part of your practice, whether through gentle observation, honey-based spells, or sitting in stillness near a buzzing hive. You don’t need to live in the countryside or keep your own bees (though if you do, I’m wildly jealous). You just need to be open, respectful, and willing to listen.
Understanding Bee Magic
Why Bees Are Sacred in Witchcraft
Bees have long been seen as messengers between realms. In folklore from all over the world, bees are symbols of the soul, of hard work, of divine order and connection. They carry pollen, yes, but they also carry stories, energy, and whispers from the spirit world.
In some traditions, it’s said that bees know everything. That they see what we do and carry it back to the hive. In others, bees must be told of deaths, births, marriages, and any big events, or they may leave. This custom, known as “telling the bees,” is one of my favourite pieces of ancestral lore. It speaks to the quiet, sacred contract between humans and bees.
The Energy of Bees
Bees are about balance. They remind us of the relationship between giving and receiving. They work tirelessly for the hive but also rest when needed. Their world is rooted in cooperation, clarity of roles, and living in tune with nature. And, there’s deep magic in that.
When you begin to work with bee energy, it can help you find focus, build community, and connect more fully to the rhythm of your own body and environment. It’s not always loud magic, but it is potent.
Ways to Connect With Bees in Your Practice
Simply Sit With Them
The first and most important way to begin working with bees is to just be with them. Sit quietly in your garden or a local park where you know bees visit. Watch them move. Listen to the pitch of their buzz. Feel their rhythm.
Bees will not sting you if you are calm and non-threatening – they’re too busy working. So, let them show you what presence and purpose look like.
This form of connection is especially powerful for witches who struggle with meditation. You don’t need to sit cross-legged with your eyes closed. Just sit and watch. Breathe with them.
Create a Bee Altar or Offering Space
If you feel called to honour bees in your home or garden, set up a small altar with bee-related imagery or items: honey, beeswax candles, flowers they love (like lavender or clover), or art that features bees. Keep it simple. The point isn’t perfection – it’s presence.
Leave offerings of honey (organic and raw if you can) outside as a gesture of gratitude. Never feed bees sugar water unless they are in danger and need emergency help. Wild bees are healthiest when left to nature.
Incorporate Honey and Beeswax in Spellwork
Honey is a powerful magical ingredient. It’s sweet, sticky, preserving, and deeply symbolic. Use it to:
- Sweeten communications (anoint a blue candle with honey)
- Attract abundance (drip honey on your money altar)
- Strengthen bonds (add to jars or love spells)
Beeswax is equally sacred. Use beeswax candles when you want to honour the earth, ground your energy, or create a sacred container for a ritual.
Use Bee Imagery in Visualisation or Meditation
Close your eyes and imagine yourself as a bee. What are you doing? Where are you flying? What are you pollinating?
Alternatively, visualise a buzzing hive in your solar plexus, alive and golden. Let the sound of the bees activate your confidence, focus, and inner drive.
Listen for Their Messages
Remember that TikTok line? “I tell the bees.”
Bees are brilliant listeners. When you’re overwhelmed or holding onto something, speak it aloud to them. Not to vent or release (though that may happen), but to witness.
Whisper into the garden. Share your truth. Tell the bees. They will carry it, hold it, and maybe, in time, show you a path forward.
Working with Bee Deities and Energies
Bee Goddesses and Guides
Some witches feel drawn to specific deities connected to bees, such as:
- Melissa: In ancient Greece, the melissae were priestesses of the goddess Demeter, connected to bees and the underworld.
- Aristaeus: A minor Greek god linked to beekeeping and honey.
- Bhramari Devi: A Hindu goddess associated with bees and protection.
Even if you don’t work with named deities, you can honour the spirit of the hive itself. Speak to Bee as a collective spirit. Ask permission before working with their energy.
Practical Magic With Bees
Hive-Inspired Spells
Take inspiration from the hive in your spells:
- Honey Jar Spells: A classic for sweetening relationships and softening tension.
- Buzzing Focus Spells: Sit near bees before studying or creating. Let their hum fill your mind and energise your focus.
- Community Spells: Use bee imagery or beeswax candles to call in your people, strengthen friendships, or cultivate teamwork.
Bee Protection Magic
Bees are fierce when needed. They defend their hive. You can call on bee energy for protection:
- Wear a bee pendant or ring as a talisman.
- Anoint doorways with beeswax to ward off harmful energy.
- Use the buzz as a sound shield during divination or shadow work.
A Note on Ethics and Reverence
Bees are sacred and endangered. Working with them magically also means protecting them physically. Support local beekeepers who practise ethical and sustainable beekeeping. Plant bee-friendly gardens. Avoid pesticides. Use honey and beeswax mindfully.
Never harvest anything from bees without knowledge or permission, and f you ever have the opportunity to visit a hive, treat it as you would a temple.
Final Thoughts
Bees have woven themselves through my practice in quiet ways over the years. They remind me to show up, to work with intention, to rest when I need to, and to honour both the sweetness and the sting of life. They are gentle teachers, but firm ones too.
If you’ve ever felt called to the bees, maybe now is the time to begin listening. You don’t need to rush out and buy honeycomb or a beekeeping suit. Just notice. Watch who visits your garden. Hear the hum in the air. Pay attention when they appear in dreams or divination.
And maybe next time you’re carrying a heavy heart, you could try what that witch said. Tell the bees.
Speak your truth into the world. Let it buzz its way into healing.
Whether you’re channeling Granny Weatherwax or simply sipping tea in your backyard, I hope bee magic brings you the same clarity, focus, and quiet joy it has brought me. May your words be sweet, your spells strong, and your spirit always in tune with the hum of life around you.
Buzz gently, my darling.
