Living in Adelaide, I’m lucky to have plenty of sunshine, and with summer just around the corner, I can already feel the sun’s energy bringing me back to life after a rather dark and rainy winter. There’s something so uplifting about how the sun seems to refresh not only our bodies but also our spirits, giving us that extra boost when we need it most.

After my life in Scotland, I know how precious those little moments of sunlight can be during winter. Even a few minutes of sunshine can make all the difference when the days feel short and the cold lingers. That’s why I think it’s so important to connect with the sun’s energy, especially during those long, darker months.

Today, I want to share a simple ritual that can help you align with the sun’s energy, no matter where you are. Let’s tap into that warmth and light together, bringing a bit of sunshine into our hearts and homes to carry us through the winter.

A Ritual for Aligning with the Sun’s Energy.

Why Align with the Sun?

The Sun is such a powerful and positive force in our lives. It represents life, energy, and warmth, and aligning with its energy can bring so much clarity and vitality into our own lives. If you’re looking to boost your mood, get clear on something, or simply feel more connected to the world around you, working with the Sun’s energy can help you feel renewed and energised.

Preparing for the Ritual.

Start by choosing a time of day when the Sun feels most powerful for you. You may prefer those chill moments at the start of sunrise feels, or perhaps the midday Sun or even the gentle glow of sunset. It’s all about what feels best to you. There’s no wrong time (unless you’re doing this at night… please don’t do this at night…)

Find a comfortable spot where you can see or feel the Sun. If it’s not possible to go outside, sitting by a window where the Sun’s rays come through is perfect too. The most important thing is that you feel warm, comfortable and ready to focus.

Gathering Your Tools.

To get started, you’ll want to gather a few simple items that represent the Sun’s energy:

  • A yellow or gold candle to symbolise the Sun.
  • Crystals like citrine*, amber, or sunstone that hold solar energy.
  • A small bowl of water to represent the life-giving element nourished by the Sun.
  • A piece of paper and a pen to jot down your intentions.

And of course, feel free to add anything else that resonates with you. Maybe a plant or a stone that helps you feel grounded and balanced, or even something personal that makes you feel connected to nature.

*I am going to be fussy with this, but try to make it true citrine, and not heat treated amethyst. Many retailers sell heat treated amethyst as citrine, and it’s a big bugbear of mine.

Cleansing Your Space and Energy.

Before you start any ritual, it’s important to clear your space and energy. This doesn’t have to be complicated, and can be as simple as sprinkling a little salt around your space, saining, clapping your hands, or ringing a small bell. It’s all about whatever feels right for you.

As you clear your space, imagine any stagnant or negative energy dissolving and the Sun’s bright, warm energy filling the area. Breathe deeply and let the tension melt away as you create a space for the Sun’s light to come through.

Setting Your Intentions.

Now that your space is all cleared, it’s time to focus on your intentions. Think about why you want to connect with the Sun’s energy today. Do you need clarity, a boost of motivation, or just a sense of warmth and comfort? Take a moment to reflect, and when you’re ready, write down what you want to call in on your piece of paper.

As you write, imagine the Sun’s rays shining on your intentions, filling them with light and energy. Picture your desires being powered by the Sun’s strength as you work through the ritual.

Lighting the Candle.

Once your intentions are set, light the yellow or gold candle. As the flame flickers, think of it as your own piece of the Sun, radiating warmth and light into your space. Take a few moments to focus on the flame, feeling its warmth and letting its brightness wash over you.

As you watch the flame, picture yourself basking in the sunlight, feeling the warmth on your skin and the light clearing away any mental fog or confusion. Let the Sun’s energy flow through you, filling you with vitality from head to toe.

Meditating with the Sun’s Energy.

Now that you’ve connected with the Sun’s light, close your eyes and start to focus on your breath. With each inhale, imagine drawing in the Sun’s powerful energy, and with each exhale, release any doubts, stress, or worries that might be weighing you down.

If you’re outside, feel the Sun’s rays warming your skin and filling you with its positive energy. If you’re indoors, visualise the Sun shining brightly on you, sending its rays straight through to your core.

As you meditate, let yourself feel that warmth spreading through your body. Imagine yourself glowing with the Sun’s light, feeling stronger, more energised, and ready to take on whatever comes your way.

Charging Your Crystals.

If you have chosen to include crystals in your ritual, this is the perfect time to charge them with the Sun’s energy. Hold the crystal in your hand and picture the sunlight pouring into it, filling it up with warmth and radiance. You could say something simple like, “I charge this crystal with the Sun’s energy to carry its light and strength.”

Let your crystal absorb the sunlight for a few minutes. Once you feel it’s fully charged, place it beside your candle or on your altar, where it can continue soaking up that positive energy.

Giving Thanks to the Sun.

After spending time connecting with the Sun, don’t forget to show gratitude. Gratitude helps strengthen your connection and shows respect for the energy you’ve been working with. Take a moment to give thanks to the Sun for its light, warmth, and life-giving energy.

You can speak your thanks aloud or keep it to yourself, whatever feels natural. You might say something like, “Thank you, Sun, for your warmth and your light. I honour your energy and give thanks for the clarity and strength you bring into my life.”

Grounding Yourself.

After connecting with such a powerful energy, it’s important to ground yourself. Hold the grounding object you brought with you, whether it’s a stone, a plant, or simply place your hands on the Earth. Focus on feeling connected to the ground beneath you.

Take a few deep breaths and imagine the energy of the Earth anchoring you, helping you feel centred and balanced after your ritual. Let the Earth’s steady energy support you as you let go of any excess energy from the ritual.

Sealing the Ritual.

Now that you’re grounded, it’s time to close the ritual. Gently blow out your candle, and as you do, picture the Sun’s energy continuing to work within you, even though the flame is no longer lit.

You might want to keep the charged crystals with you throughout the day to carry the Sun’s energy with you, or place them somewhere special where they can continue radiating that energy into your space.

Fold up the piece of paper with your intentions and keep it in a safe place. You can return to it whenever you need a reminder of the intentions you set during this ritual.

Staying Connected with the Sun.

This ritual is a beautiful way to connect with the Sun’s energy, but it’s not the only way. You can stay connected to the Sun’s light by simply taking a few moments each day to step outside and soak up its warmth, or even just pause and look out the window.

The Sun is always there, offering its energy to us. Whether you’re doing a full ritual or just taking a quiet moment to acknowledge its presence, you can draw on its light to bring more clarity, warmth, and vitality into your life.

Final Thoughts.

Like most rituals, connecting with the sun’s energy is simple and doesn’t need to be anything elaborate. It’s about taking a moment to pause, breathe, and soak in the warmth, even if the sun isn’t shining right outside your window. Whether it’s a sunny summer day or the middle of winter, the sun’s energy is always there for us to tap into.

Wherever you are, taking the time to align with this energy can brighten your mood, refresh your spirit, and add a little more light to your day. It’s the small things – stepping into the sun for a moment, enjoying a warm drink, or even just imagining that sunlight filling you up.

I hope this ritual brings you that bit of warmth and comfort when you need it most. Keep it handy during those cold, dark days, and let the sun’s energy lift you up and guide you.
