Anxiety and I are well-acquainted, and while I’ve managed to keep it mostly under control, it still likes to pop in from time to time – always uninvited! With my recent breakup, it’s felt like anxiety has been eerily watching over my shoulder, and I’ve had to lean even more on my witchy practices and mindfulness to ground myself. It’s all too easy to get lost in those cyclical thoughts that keep us running in mental circles, getting nowhere fast. But that’s where my grounding techniques come in, bringing me back down when my mind is running a mile a minute.
When anxiety is taking the reins, turning to the earth and energy practices has become my go-to. There’s something incredibly soothing about aligning with the natural world and feeling its steady presence beneath me. Whether it’s through a bit of ritual, a quiet moment with a favourite crystal, or even just taking a deep, purposeful breath, grounding brings a much-needed calm. These small intentional moments help me return to a centred state, reminding me that I am supported and that peace is still there when I need it most.
Today, I wanted to share some of these grounding techniques with you – methods I turn to time and again when anxiety strikes. These are simple, effective ways to find calm within the storm, ones that have guided me back to myself countless times. I hope they bring you a similar sense of peace and steadiness, no matter what might be swirling in your world.

Witchy Grounding Techniques for Anxiety.
Earthing Rituals.
Earthing, or connecting your body directly to the Earth, is a powerful way to ground anxious energy. This practice invites the Earth’s soothing energy to flow through you, balancing your spirit and calming your mind.
Barefoot Walks in Nature.
Find a grassy patch or a quiet sandy spot if you’re near a beach. Walking barefoot allows you to connect physically with the Earth, releasing any built-up tension. Focus on each step, feeling the texture beneath your feet. Visualise any anxious thoughts sinking down through your soles, dispersing into the ground and transforming into peaceful energy. Even a few minutes of this mindful contact can help.
Sitting on the Ground.
If walking isn’t practical, simply sit or lie on the ground. Rest your palms on the Earth, or lie back and look up at the sky. Imagine roots growing from your hands, spreading deep into the Earth’s core. Let your breath slow as you picture yourself absorbing the Earth’s energy, bringing a sense of steadiness and resilience.
Working with Stones and Crystals.
Who doesn’t love crystals! Crystals are beloved for their grounding properties, especially dark stones that carry the Earth’s essence. Holding, wearing, or meditating with grounding stones can draw out anxious feelings, leaving you with a sense of calm and focus.
Black Tourmaline.
Known for its protective and grounding energy, black tourmaline is often called the ‘security blanket’ of stones. Hold it in your hands when anxiety starts to bubble up. Close your eyes and imagine your worries flowing into the stone, which absorbs and neutralises them. If you keep black tourmaline near you, such as on a necklace or in your pocket, it acts as a constant calming presence.
Hematite.
With its silvery, reflective surface, hematite is perfect for reflecting negativity away and grounding scattered thoughts. Place a piece on your forehead for a few minutes, breathing deeply, and feel your mind calm as if a cool wave is washing over you. Some find it useful to carry a small piece in their bag or wear it as jewellery for on-the-go grounding.
Grounding Through Breath.
Breathwork can help you centre and calm yourself during anxious moments, as breath is a direct connection between body and spirit. In witchcraft, intentional breathing can also be infused with visualisations that deepen the grounding effect.
Earthy Breathing.
In a quiet space, close your eyes and focus on your breath. With each inhale, imagine you’re drawing in the rich, calming energy of the Earth. Picture this energy as a warm, earthy colour, like brown or deep green. As you exhale, imagine releasing any anxious energy, which flows down to your feet and back into the ground. Repeat this visualisation until you feel grounded and calm.
Square Breathing with Elements.
This technique uses elemental imagery to deepen your breathwork. Breathe in for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, and pause for four. With each stage of the breath, connect to a different element. Imagine air filling your lungs on the inhale, hold the warmth of fire, release with the grounding energy of Earth, and pause with the gentle flow of water. This visualisation can enhance the connection to each element, centring your mind and grounding anxious energy.
Grounding Foods and Teas.
We can also ground ourselves through the food we consume, making this mindful practice even more accessible. Eating certain foods or sipping specific teas can have a calming effect on our energy, gently bringing us back to a grounded state.
Root Vegetables.
Foods grown within soil, like potatoes, carrots, and sweet potatoes, have grounding qualities that can help stabilise your energy. If you feel particularly anxious, prepare a simple meal with roasted root vegetables. As you eat, savour each bite, acknowledging that you’re nourishing yourself with Earth’s grounding energy.
Herbal Teas for Grounding
We all know how much I love green tea, however, when anxiety takes hold, I turn to different infusions to help. Herbs like ginger, dandelion, and chamomile are known for their soothing properties. Brew a tea with one of these grounding herbs, and sip it slowly. Hold the cup with both hands, feeling the warmth spread through you. Imagine the herbs’ calming energy mingling with your own, soothing your anxiety and restoring your balance.
Anchoring with Visualisations.
Visualisation can be a potent tool for grounding, helping us mentally connect with stabilising energy when anxiety strikes. Visualisations are easy to do anywhere, making them particularly useful when you need quick relief.
Tree Root Visualisation.
Find a comfortable position and close your eyes. Imagine roots growing from your feet or tailbone, reaching deep into the ground. These roots connect you to the Earth’s core, stabilising you no matter where you are. As you breathe, imagine any anxious feelings flowing down through the roots, stretching out into the Earth below, leaving you centred and calm.
Stone in a Stream.
Picture yourself as a tall stone in the centre of a stream. The water flows around you, carrying away any stress or tension. You remain steady, rooted, and calm, while the current washes away anxiety. This visualisation can help you find stillness even when life feels chaotic, reminding you that you can stay grounded no matter what surrounds you.
Connecting with Earth Elements Daily.
Bringing small grounding rituals into our daily lives can create a sense of calm and stability. Incorporate these earthy elements into your routine to gently soothe anxiety and keep you grounded.
Lighting a Candle.
The act of lighting a candle can be grounding in itself. Choose an earthy scent like cedarwood, sandalwood, or patchouli for added grounding benefits. As you light the candle, set an intention to release any anxious thoughts and invite calm into your space. Focus on the flicker of the flame for a few minutes, allowing your mind to quieten as you connect to the element of fire.
Bath or Shower Ritual.
Water can help wash away anxiety, making baths or showers perfect grounding rituals. As the water flows over you, imagine it absorbing any anxious energy and carrying it down the drain. You could add grounding essential oils, like vetiver or cedarwood, to your bath or use a salt scrub, which is grounding and purifying. This ritual can be a beautiful way to release tension and find peace at the end of a long day.

Final Thoughts.
It’s not always easy to shake off anxiety, but having a few grounding techniques can make a world of difference, especially when you feel like you’re at breaking point. When you’re feeling frayed at the edges or like your thoughts are running circles, reconnecting with the earth and leaning on your witchy practice can help. These tools remind us that we’re not alone and give us something steady to hold on to when things feel shaky.
These techniques might be a tad simple, but they bring a quiet kind of comfort. They’re not meant to make anxiety vanish. They’re just little moments that help us breathe, slow down, and find a bit of calm. Over time, they will start to feel like trusted rituals, something you know you can turn to whenever you’re feeling off. Remember, grounding isn’t about pushing anxiety away – it’s about making space to feel steady, even for a moment.
So, as you try these out, I hope they help you find a little peace when you need it most. Think of grounding as a small gift you give yourself whenever life feels overwhelming. You’ve got these tools, your breath, and the support of the earth – and that’s enough to bring you back to solid ground whenever you need it.
