The warmth of light and intention

The first time I cast a candle spell on the summer solstice (many many years ago!), I was living in a tiny flat without a garden. It was ridiculously hot and humid, I didn’t have an air conditioner, and I was dripping with sweat before I even lit the match. I remember thinking, “Is this even going to work?” But the moment that wick caught fire and the flame flickered into life, something inside me clicked. It wasn’t about the setup or the perfect space. It was about me. My intention. My energy. That flame became a mirror. It showed me how much I wanted to let go of my doubt and step into something more powerful, more open, more alive.

The summer solstice is pure, radiant potential. It’s that long exhale after months of growth. It’s abundance, celebration, full bloom. The sun is at its peak, and whether you’re in a sun-drenched backyard or peeking through a window hoping for a breeze, you can work with that energy. Candle magic is one of the most accessible and heartfelt ways to honour the turning of the Wheel, and it can be as simple or as intricate as you want it to be.

For me, candle magic has always been about the little moments. The flicker of a flame while I drink my tea. The scent of melting wax reminding me to breathe. The match catching as I whisper an intention. Especially at the solstice, when everything feels heightened, candle spells become a way to capture that expansive energy and hold it close. They help me set fire to my doubts, make peace with my shadows, and shine brighter than before. So let me show you how I work with candle magic during this luminous, golden season.

Why candle magic works so beautifully at midsummer

Candle magic taps into the core energy of the solstice: fire, transformation, and visibility. The sun is shining its brightest, and when we light a candle, we’re echoing that solar power in our own space. It’s a simple act with ancient roots. Fire has always been sacred. A force of change, light, warmth, and sometimes destruction – all of which play into transformation and manifestation.

At midsummer, when the sun is at its peak, we have the opportunity to harness that fiery energy for clarity, courage, and release. Candle magic aligns beautifully because it creates a focused flame we can work with directly. It’s like holding a miniature sun in your hands, inviting it to ignite your desires and burn away what no longer serves you.

If you’re someone who gets overwhelmed by too much ritual or feels pressure to get it ‘right’, candle magic is your friend. It doesn’t need tools or formal structure. All you really need is a candle, a match, and your intention. The rest is a conversation between you and the flame.

Choosing your candle

Colour magic for solstice spells

While white candles can be used for anything, solstice candle magic is a beautiful time to explore colour. You might choose:

  • Gold for personal power, abundance, and divine energy.
  • Orange for vitality, joy, and confidence.
  • Yellow for clarity, focus, and communication.
  • Red for passion, strength, and love.

Use what you have. I’ve used tea lights in old jam jars or birthday candles stuck in sand. The power is not in the candle itself, but in how you work with it.

Scented or unscented?

Scented candles can add another layer to your spellwork if you enjoy working with aromatherapy. Try citrus for uplifting energy, cinnamon for passion, or rosemary for clarity. But again, it’s not essential. If all you have is an emergency tea light from the back of the drawer, use it. Magic honours resourcefulness.

Prepping your candle

Carving and dressing

Before lighting your candle, you can carve symbols or words into the wax. Think runes, names, dates, sigils, or just your intention in plain language. If you’re dressing the candle with oil, choose something light and summery like olive, sunflower, or jojoba, and roll it in herbs or flowers that align with your purpose.

Some beautiful solstice-aligned herbs include:

  • Calendula for joy and healing
  • Basil for abundance
  • Lavender for peace
  • St John’s Wort for protection and solar energy

Anoint your candle by rubbing the oil from the top to the bottom to draw things in, or bottom to top to release. Again, follow your intuition.

Writing your solstice intention

Candle spells work best when your intention is focused and heartfelt. Think about what this solstice means to you. Are you celebrating growth? Letting go of something that’s weighing you down? Calling in more light? Be honest with yourself. Write your intention on a small piece of paper or whisper it into the flame as you light the candle.

Some examples:

  • “I welcome abundance and joy into my life.”
  • “I release old doubts and allow myself to shine.”
  • “This flame carries my desire for clarity and strength.”

You don’t need fancy rhyming incantations. Just speak from the heart. Your words are magic.

Casting your solstice candle spell

Setting your space

You don’t need an altar or ritual circle, but it can be lovely to create a little solstice nook. Lay out a cloth, some sunflowers or fresh herbs, maybe a crystal or two (I like citrine or sunstone). You can do this spell indoors or outside, morning or dusk. Follow your body and your energy.

Take a few deep breaths before you begin. This is your moment to connect.

Lighting the candle

As you light your candle, focus on your intention. Watch the flame catch and take a moment to feel it in your body. That warmth, that spark, that flicker – it lives in you too. Visualise the flame growing brighter as your intention grows stronger. Sit with it for as long as feels right.

You might:

  • Meditate while gazing at the flame
  • Sing or hum
  • Write in your journal
  • Whisper affirmations

Let the spell unfold naturally. You don’t have to control it.

Incorporating the sun

Charging your candle with sunlight

Before the solstice, place your candle on a windowsill or outside during the day to soak up the sun’s energy. This simple act infuses the wax with solar light, creating an even stronger link between your candle and the energy of midsummer.

Sunlight spellwork

If you’re not comfortable with fire or can’t burn candles, you can still do this spell with a solar candle or by simply meditating in direct sunlight. Imagine the sun as your candle. Visualise your intention radiating through your whole body. Let the light soak into you.

Magic meets you where you are.

Closing your spell

When you’re ready, thank the flame. If it feels right, say something like:

“I honour this flame and all it has brought to light. My spell is cast with clarity and warmth. So it is.”

You can let the candle burn down completely or snuff it out and relight it each day until it’s done. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Be safe, always.

After your spell, spend some time grounding. Eat something, drink water, go outside, or just lie on the floor and stretch. Let the magic settle into your bones.

Other ways to work candle magic at solstice

Fire gazing

If you have access to a fire pit, beach bonfire, or even just a large candle outdoors, spend time gazing into the flames. Let your thoughts drift. Ask the fire to show you what needs to be seen. Write down anything that comes to you.

Candle magic for release

Write what you’re ready to let go of on a small piece of paper. Burn it in the candle flame (safely) and drop the ashes into a fire-safe bowl. As the smoke rises, say goodbye.

Group candle rituals

If you’re celebrating with others, everyone can bring a candle and light them together. You might each share an intention aloud or place your candles in a spiral or circle. Group candle spells can be incredibly powerful, and deeply connecting.

Final Thoughts

Candle magic at the summer solstice is one of my favourite ways to mark the turning of the season. It doesn’t require a lot, and it always helps me feel more in tune with my own power. The act of lighting a flame and pouring my energy into it grounds me in ways that nothing else can. When the sun is high and the days are long, it’s the perfect time to remember your own inner light.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or disconnected from your practice, start with a candle. Let the simplicity of it bring you home to yourself. You don’t need all the tools or the perfect space. You just need your intention and a little spark. Magic begins the moment you decide to show up.

So this solstice, whether you’re barefoot in the garden or sitting by a window in your flat, light a candle. Make a wish. Let the flame remind you of everything you already are – radiant, worthy, and ready to burn away what no longer fits. The light is within you. Always has been. Always will be.
