Embracing the Solstice, Aussie Style

Growing up in Australia, I’ve always been in awe of how the seasons shape not just our environment, but our energy, our moods, and of course, our magic. The summer solstice hits differently here. It’s not about bonfires to hold back the chill or feasting to mark the return of light. Instead, it’s long, sun-drenched days where cicadas sing and icypoles drip down your chin. And that’s the kind of magic I’ve grown to love.

After spending seven years living in the UK, I really began to notice the contrast. In Scotland, the summer solstice feels like an extended golden hour. You can still see a soft glow past 10pm, a golden shimmer that never quite lets go of the Highlands. In winter, the sun barely lifts its head. The difference between the longest and shortest days feels like a spiritual event in itself. But here in Australia, it’s more subtle. Yes, our days stretch longer in summer and draw in a little earlier in winter, but it’s nowhere near the dramatic contrast of the northern hemisphere.

That means, naturally, our rituals need to adapt. While we can honour traditional practices, the way we connect with the solstice energy has to suit our land, our lifestyle, and our sunburnt seasons. So here are some of my favourite ways to celebrate the summer solstice as an Australian witch, blending old ways with new light.

Greet the Sun with Intention

Sunrise gratitude

One of the simplest and most powerful things you can do on the summer solstice is to rise with the sun. It’s the longest day of the year, and there’s a unique kind of clarity in that first golden light. Stand barefoot on the earth, face the east, and offer a few words of thanks. You don’t need to script anything fancy. Just speak from the heart.

Morning meditation or movement

You might choose to follow your sunrise greeting with a short meditation or gentle yoga flow. Stretch towards the sun. Breathe in its warmth. Let the energy of the solstice fill your lungs and set the tone for your day. Even five minutes of mindful movement or stillness can anchor you in the present.

Host a Summer Solstice Picnic

Al fresco feasting

Food is magic, and summer food is especially joyful. Plan a solstice picnic either for yourself, a few loved ones, or your coven. Think fresh fruits, crusty gluten-free bread, cheeses, herbal iced teas, and anything colourful and seasonal. Lay out a blanket under a tree or near the beach, and let nature be your altar.

Bless your meal

Before you eat, take a moment to bless your meal. Thank the sun for ripening the fruits. Thank the land for its abundance. A simple raising of your glass with a whispered intention is all it takes. This doesn’t need to be a formal ritual. Just pause and be present.

Create a Sun Jar Spell

Capture the light

If you’ve got an empty jar and a few sunny hours, this one is lovely. Place your jar out in the sun from dawn to dusk on the solstice. Inside, you might tuck a piece of citrine, a bay leaf, a sprinkle of salt, and a small slip of paper with your solstice intention.

Use your sun jar throughout the year

Once charged, your sun jar can sit on your altar or windowsill, acting as a source of solar energy when you’re feeling flat. On grey days or during the winter solstice, open it up, hold it in your hands, and breathe in the warmth you stored. It’s your little piece of summer to carry you through.

Make a Solar Infusion

Herbal brews under the sun

One of my favourite things to do is make a solar tea. Choose herbs that sing of the sun – chamomile, lemon balm, calendula, rosemary, mint. Place them in a glass jug or jar, pour over cool filtered water, and leave them to steep in full sun for several hours.

Sip with intention

Once your tea is ready, pour it into your favourite cup and take it somewhere quiet. Sip slowly, thinking about what you’re ready to grow or release. You might even speak your intention aloud between sips. This is your moment to align with the solstice energy of brightness, clarity, and growth.

Build a Fire – or a Candle Circle

Firelight rituals

If you’re somewhere safe and legal to do so, a solstice fire is a gorgeous way to connect with tradition. Invite friends, light a fire at sunset, and share stories, music, or spells. Fire represents the height of solar power, transformation, and passion.

Candle magic alternative

No fire pit? No problem. Arrange a circle of yellow, orange, and red candles. Sit in the centre and reflect on what lights you up. You might write down things you wish to release and safely burn the paper in a cauldron or fireproof bowl. This kind of ritual is deeply personal and adaptable to your space.

Make a Sun Crown or Solar Offering

Gather nature’s treasures

Go for a solstice walk and gather fallen flowers, herbs, and greenery. Use these to create a simple sun crown or wreath. Plait grasses, twist in rosemary, add petals or gum leaves. It doesn’t have to be perfect – it just has to feel meaningful.

Lay your offering on the earth

You can wear your crown during your rituals, or you might offer it back to the land with a prayer. Place it beneath a tree or on your garden altar. Thank the sun for its strength, its constancy, its light. Return what you’ve gathered with love.

Do a Summer Solstice Tarot or Oracle Spread

Connect with guidance

The solstice is a wonderful time to check in with yourself. What has grown since the winter solstice? What are you ready to shine a light on? Pull a few cards to explore these themes. You don’t need a set spread. Let your intuition guide the draw.

Journal or speak your insights

If you enjoy journaling, write your thoughts. If not, speak them aloud. Let the cards open the door to reflection. This is less about prediction and more about illumination. You are the sun. Let your insights light the way forward.

Swim, Dance, or Rest

Honour your energy

Some years, the solstice will call you to gather, dance, celebrate. Other years, it will ask you to rest, to pause, to just be. There’s no wrong way to mark the solstice. You might head to the ocean, move your body, or simply lie in the shade and breathe.

Let the moment find you

Whatever you do, let it be intentional. Let it be enough. You are already part of nature. You don’t need permission to celebrate in your own way. Whether you’re watching the sunrise from a city balcony or dipping your toes in a creek, the solstice meets you exactly where you are.

Final Thoughts

The summer solstice in Australia isn’t about recreating northern traditions perfectly. It’s about embracing our unique light, land, and rhythm. It’s about letting the sun seep into your bones and remind you of all that is still growing within you. There’s no need to rush it or force it. Let your rituals feel natural, even if they’re simple.

You don’t need a perfect altar, a bonfire on a mountain, or a coven circle dressed in linen. All you need is intention. A moment to pause. A breath of gratitude. A connection to the sun that has always watched over you. Whether you’re barefoot in the bush or under a fan in your flat, your solstice magic is real and powerful.

So, this year, may your summer solstice be filled with warmth, clarity, and joy. May you find moments that feel golden and true. And may you carry the light with you, long after the day has passed.
