Lughnasadh, also known as Lammas, the first of the three harvest festivals, is a time to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished over the past year. It’s a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and to acknowledge the personal and spiritual growth we’ve experienced throughout the year. For me, The Wheel of the Year marks a number of deeply personal events. Since embracing my path as a witch, I’ve found immense value in observing these ancient festivals. They ground me and offer a rhythm to my spiritual practice that aligns beautifully with the natural world. Lughnasadh especially is a time for meditation and reflection on my growth.
Personally, the last year of my life has been a complete whirlwind. From the new beginnings that come from moving interstate to losing my father to his battle with cancer, the past twelve months have given me a lot to reflect and meditate on. So, this year, I invite you to join me in my Lughnasadh meditation practice. We’ll explore how to create a sacred space, guide you through a meditation session, and I’ll offer tips on how to integrate this practice into your Lughnasadh celebrations. So, let’s embrace the energy of the harvest and honour the growth we’ve cultivated within ourselves.
Lughnasadh Meditation for Reflecting on Growth.
Creating Your Sacred Space.
Setting the Scene.
Creating a sacred space for your Lughnasadh meditation is the first step in grounding yourself and inviting the energies of the harvest into your practice. Choose a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. This could be a cosy corner of your home, a favourite spot in your garden, or even a local park. Ensure that the area is clean and free from distractions, allowing you to focus fully on your meditation.
Decorate your space with symbols of the harvest. Consider using items such as wheat sheaves, corn husks, or a small bowl of fresh fruit and vegetables. These items not only represent the abundance of the season but also help to connect you with the Earth and its cycles. You might also want to light a candle to signify the warmth and light of the sun, which plays a crucial role in the growth of our crops.
For added ambience, you can burn some incense or diffuse essential oils that remind you of late summer, such as chamomile, lavender, or frankincense. Soft, instrumental music or nature sounds can also enhance the ambience and help you relax. Remember, this space is for you, so feel free to add any personal touches that make it feel special and sacred.
Grounding and Centring.
Before diving into your meditation, it’s important to ground and centre yourself. Grounding helps you to connect with the Earth and feel more stable, while centring allows you to focus your energy and intentions. Begin by sitting or standing comfortably in your sacred space. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
Visualise roots extending from the soles of your feet, reaching deep into the Earth. Feel the energy of the Earth rising up through these roots, filling your body with a sense of stability and strength. As you breathe, imagine a warm, golden light surrounding you, protecting and nurturing you. This light represents the energy of the harvest and the abundance that surrounds you.
Take a moment to set your intention for this meditation. It could be as simple as reflecting on your personal growth over the past year or expressing gratitude for the blessings in your life. Hold this intention in your mind as you move into the meditation, allowing it to guide your thoughts and reflections.
The Lughnasadh Meditation.
Guided Meditation.
Begin your meditation by sitting comfortably in your sacred space. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing your body to relax with each exhale. Visualise yourself standing in a field of golden wheat, the sun shining warmly overhead. Feel the gentle breeze on your skin and the soft earth beneath your feet. This is your personal sanctuary, a place where you can connect deeply with the energies of Lughnasadh.
As you stand in this field, reflect on the past year. Think about the seeds you have planted in your life, both literally and metaphorically. Consider the projects you’ve started, the relationships you’ve nurtured, and the personal goals you’ve set. Acknowledge the growth and progress you’ve made, no matter how small it may seem. Each step forward is a testament to your strength and perseverance.
Next, focus on the areas of your life where you have experienced challenges or setbacks. Instead of viewing these as failures, see them as opportunities for growth and learning. What lessons have you gained from these experiences? How have they shaped you into the person you are today? Take a few moments to honour these lessons and express gratitude for the wisdom they have brought into your life.
Visualising Future Growth.
With a sense of gratitude and reflection, shift your focus to the future. Visualise the field of wheat transforming into a lush garden filled with vibrant flowers and thriving plants. This garden represents your future growth and the potential that lies ahead. Imagine yourself walking through this garden, tending to each plant with care and love.
Consider what seeds you want to plant for the coming year. These could be new projects, relationships, or personal goals. Visualise yourself nurturing these seeds, providing them with the necessary care and attention to help them grow. Feel the excitement and anticipation of watching these seeds flourish and bring abundance into your life.
As you conclude your meditation, take a moment to thank the Earth and the energies of Lughnasadh for their guidance and support. Slowly bring your awareness back to your physical surroundings, wiggling your fingers and toes. When you feel ready, open your eyes, carrying the sense of peace and gratitude with you as you continue your Lughnasadh celebrations.

Integrating Meditation into Your Lughnasadh Rituals.
Daily Reflection Practices.
Incorporating daily reflection practices into your Lughnasadh celebrations can deepen your connection to the season and enhance your personal growth. Consider starting each day with a brief meditation or journaling session focused on gratitude and reflection. Write down three things you are grateful for and one lesson you have learnt from a recent challenge. This simple practice can help shift your mindset towards positivity and growth.
You might also want to create a visual representation of your growth. This could be a vision board, a scrapbook, or even a simple drawing. Include images, words, and symbols that represent your accomplishments and the areas where you want to continue growing. Place this visual reminder in a spot where you will see it daily, helping to keep your intentions and goals at the forefront of your mind.
Community Connection.
Lughnasadh is also a time for community and connection. Consider sharing your reflections and intentions with a trusted friend or within your group of friends, or coven. This can provide additional support and accountability as you work towards your goals. You might even organise a small gathering or virtual meet-up to celebrate Lughnasadh together, sharing stories of growth and gratitude.
Joining in on community rituals or events can also bring your Lughnasadh to life. Look for local festivals, workshops, or online events that focus on the themes of the harvest and personal growth. These gatherings can offer inspiration, new perspectives, and a sense of belonging as you connect with others who share your spiritual journey.
Ongoing Growth and Reflection.
As you move beyond Lughnasadh, continue to nurture the seeds you have planted. Regularly check in with yourself and reflect on your progress. Adjust your goals and intentions as needed, allowing yourself the flexibility to grow and evolve. Remember that growth is a continuous journey, and each step forward is a valuable part of your path.
Consider integrating seasonal meditations and reflections into your spiritual practice throughout the year. By aligning yourself with the natural cycles, you can maintain a sense of balance and connection with the Earth. Celebrate each harvest festival with gratitude and reflection, honouring the growth and abundance in your life.
Lughnasadh offers a beautiful opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate the growth you’ve experienced. Through meditation and mindful reflection, you can deepen your connection to this ancient festival and enhance your personal and spiritual journey.
Final Thoughts.
Lughnasadh is a time when I can truly appreciate the growth I’ve experienced over the past year. This meditation has become an important part of my acknowledgement of the season, allowing me to reflect on my journey and set intentions for the future.
As you prepare your own Lughnasadh meditation, remember to be gentle with yourself. Growth is not always linear, and it’s important to acknowledge both the triumphs and the challenges. Each experience shapes us, teaches us, and ultimately helps us become who we are meant to be. Embrace the journey with an open heart, and trust that the seeds you plant today will bloom in their own perfect time.
As we celebrate the harvest and the abundance it brings, let’s also celebrate ourselves and the incredible journey we are on. Thank you for joining me in this meditation, and may your Lughnasadh be filled with reflection, gratitude, and boundless growth.
